Energi dimensions compared to competitors

Ford has not released much about Energi or the C-Max hybrid in terms of specifications. But it has released the external dimensions - which are same for the plug-in Energi & the hybrid C-Max. Let us take a look at how it compares to vehicles from competitors and similar vehicles from Ford itself.

In the table below I've shown the new Ford Focus Hatchback which like Energi is based on Ford's global C platform. So, we can see that Energi & Focus re very similar in external dimensions, except for the height. Being a utility vehicle, Energi will be taller than Focus. In the last column we see C-Max gas vehicle. It is about 5 inches longer than Energi and an inch higher. This is to accommodate the two extra child seats in C-Max.

Dimensions Compared
Another interesting comparison is with Ford Escape Hybrid, which is being discontinued. Again the dimensions are very similar - except for the height. Escape is 4 inches taller. This should make Energi more stable than Escape, though a taller Energi could have been useful to located the batteries under the floor. We will have to wait to see where the batteries really are.

Then we come to competitors - Volt and Prius. Volt are longer than Energi by 4 inches but is shorter by 6. Because of the way Volt is designed it doesn't have have much of a trunk space. So, I still expect Energi to have larger trunk space than Volt, given the extra height. We don't have any specs on plug-in Prius (PHV) - but comparing to standard prius, we see Prius longer by 2 inches but Energi is taller by 3 inches and wider by 3 inches too. So, I expect similat trunk space, but better shoulder space. Headroom may be similar if Energi seats are higher than Prius. Prius v is 8 inches longer and thus will clearly have more luggage space than C-Max Hybrid.

From the above specs, can we guess the internal dimensions of Energi ? For that we will have to wait for my next blog post.
